Using Graphics In A Menu

One of the reasons to use a DHTML menu is to have an attractive and functional site navigation system without the use of graphics. Image files can make it more difficult to create and maintain a menu, and they can impair the performance of a menu.

Having said that, it is possible to include graphics in a menu generated using Sothink DHTMLMenu. A menu can include background images, icons, or even individual images for each menu item and state. In the following example, we used two blank button images, one for the mouse out state and the other for the mouse over state. Then, by experimenting with the menu item spacing, we were able to display the button image and center the menu item text within the image.

Such a menu would be difficult to develop and maintain. If a button appearance is desired, we think it makes more sense to use one of the Styles included with Sothink DHTMLMenu, or to create your own Style. The following example uses a modified version of a Style included with the program:

The above menu uses no graphics, and it would be relatively easy to develop and maintain.
